Species-specific Vertical Habitat Utilisation by Tunas in the Tropical Wcpo Wcpfc-sc9-2013/rp-pttp-03

چکیده
2 Background The Pacific Tuna Tagging Programme (PTTP) is a joint research project being implemented by the Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the PNG National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and the members and participating non‐members of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). The goal of the PTTP is to improve stock assessment and management of skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye tuna in the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). This report specifically addresses objective 4 of the PTTP: " obtain information on species‐specific vertical habitat utilisation by tunas in the tropical WCPO, and describe the impacts of FADs on vertical behaviour. " Vertical habitat utilisation plays a large role in determining vulnerability to all major gear types operating in the fishery. This objective seeks to characterise the effect of FADs (anchored and drifting) on tropical tuna vertical behaviour and habitat utilization. This information will allow better estimation of abundance indices and standardised effort for the main fisheries and possibly contribute directly to the design of management measures for FAD fishing.

WCPFC MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES WORKSHOP Manila, Republic of the Philippines 28-29 November 2012 CHARACTERISTICS OF HISTORICAL POPULATION DYNAMICS OF TEMPERATE TUNAS IN THE NORTH PACIFIC AND IMPLICATIONS FOR MANAGEMENT
We examined long-term time series of stock status for the temperate tunas Pacific bluefin and albacore in the north Pacific, and characterized temporal changes in the stock status of both species through comparison with tropical tunas in the Western and Central Pacific. The temperate tunas appear to have historically experienced considerable fluctuation in stock status over a long period of tim...

An Indicator-based Analysis of Key Shark Species based on Data Held by SPC-OFP
Longline and purse seine logsheet and observer datasets held by SPC-OFP were examined to assess the stock status of eight WCPFC key shark species. Both longline and purse seine logsheet datasets suffer from missing shark catch records and a lack of species-specific recording, therefore the indicator analysis was based on observer data only. Shark data from the observer data sets are, however, a...

We examined long-term time-series of stock status of temperate tunas in the north Pacific: Pacific bluefin and albacore tunas, and characterized temporal changes of the both stock sizes by comparing with tropical tunas in the western and central Pacific. Generally, the temperate tunas historically experienced considerable fluctuations in stock status over a long period of time, while tropical t...
